{Friday Fun} Pillowbox Door Hanger

These next 2 are by Sharon (quietanglesb). I really like how she used it to hold seeds and the cute saying.

This next one is such a great idea. Everybody loves a little TLC when they are sick.

As I am looking at all of there great ideas I am thinking of the fun things that could be done with this template. I am thinking of leaving a little suprise on the door for my daughter on Valentines day (like Mel did - see below). Or what a fun way to leave some treats for your neighbors at any holiday.

{Tutorial Thursday} Pillow Door Hanger and Accordion Flowers!

Hello, there! LeAnn, here.
Today is a tutorial on using a couple of Krisi's products together:

For this project I used the "She's All That" kit from Jady Day Studio.
Her designs can also be found at Scrap Orchard.

After I clipped the papers to Krisi's template and printed, here's what I had gathered:

Next, I scored the fold lines with my bone scoring tool. Then, I cut out the pieces and folded along the score lines. I accordion folded the strips for the flowers and glued the strips together for the larger flowers. For a detailed tutorial on assembling the accordion flowers see this post HERE.

Then I glued the piece called the "back" to the inside of the hanger.

Next I folded the pillow over and glued the flap closed, as well as folding up the bottom and gluing that. The hanger part is now done!

Next up, finishing the flowers. First I glued the ends of the accordion strips together to form a circle. After they dry, I like to cut circles out of scrap paper and use hot glue to hold the flattened-out flowers together. No one will see the backside, anyway, right? :)

After gluing some buttons in the center front of the flowers and paper strips to the back, I arranged them in the pocket of the door hanger. Its a pocket full of posies!

You could get creative with what you use for the center.
How about candies? (You might even find a way to have them remain edible!) You could also attach pipe-cleaners to make stems, or even rolled paper. Get creative!

My favorite configuration, however, was when I used one of the smallest flowers as the center of the flower on the pocket, and filled the pocket with kisses! Yum! :)
Lots of ways to create, and you don't even have to end with what you started out to create! :)

{Wacky Wednesday} Softening Your Camera's Built-In Flash

Happy Wednesday, friends! Sarah (sporte91) here to show you a quick tip for using your camera's built in flash.

I happen to own a Canon 580ex to pair with my DSLR. But sometimes I don't feel like lugging that big thing around, or a moment is happening too quickly to pop it on, or I don't have batteries charged for it. So what do I do if it's dark and I need to use flash? I use the one built into my camera. But not all by itself. Using your camera's built-in flash can give a harsh, cool look to your photos that's unnatural and not at all flattering.

Here's a shot I grabbed of my goofy son, using my built-in flash:

Can you see how his skin looks really pale and the shadows are harsh? Not so good. But I can fix that with a really simple tool.

This is a piece of computer printer paper, rolled into a tube. When I sit this over my camera's flash, it makes the light bigger and softer.

Here's a photo with my paper tube over the flash:

Can you see the difference? The shadows are softer, and the color of his skin is warmer and more natural.

Try this for yourself. Experiment by folding your paper into different shapes and see how it changes the look of your photos.

{Project Life} Week 3

We had a busy week this week, with lots of picture taking. Although I still missed a day of taking a picture – Tuesday at the baby shower. I sent an e-mail out to someone who got a group shot to see if she could e-mail it to me. I will stick it in there if she does. If not I will just modify that space.

I was listening to The Digi Show and they were talking about projects and releasing some of the burdens that many place on them doing “projects”. This is the first time I have gotten this far on a project. I wanted to do P52 last year and I couldn’t even decide when the week went (Sunday to Saturday or Saturday to Friday – since the first was a Saturday last year). So I am doing great this year!

I must say I am loving this method of scrapping as I feel like our LIFE is actually being scrapped, it is great.

Here are my two pages – for week 3.

I used supplies from Chelle’s Creations – What a Hoot and Gina Miller’s Journaling Cards. Images are linked to my gallery at Scrap Orchard. I did do a little modification to the colors of the word art so it matched the other colors better – I loosely used this tutorial here. The day of the week labels I made myself – I will try to package them up for you for next week – for anyone who would like them.

{Monday Mix} Hybrid Home

Hi, everyone! It's Rebecca (reboscraps) here with a quick and easy tutorial for you. When I saw the Plan It: Menus in Krisi's shop, I knew it was the perfect thing to cute up the fridge. I've often made lists of what's for dinner, but always on scraps of paper here and there. I used her Menus template and cute digi scrap supplies to make a permanent fridge list that I can reuse again and again.

I started with these two products from the Scrap Orchard Market, first of course is, Krisi's Plan It: Menus

and I added papers from the Family Reunion Collab by Jady Day Studio and Suzy Q Scraps

I liked the vertical template best, so I designed my project, and printed it out:

I'm going to show you how I laminated mine, but if you don't have a laminator you could simply slide this into a standard letter-size page protector and trim the side with the holes. This would be a super quick and easy way to make your menu reusable, and it would look something like this:

You might notice that because of the printer margins, I ended up with some white borders on my printout. I decided I would trim those off:

Another option would be to layer your scrapped print with a solid sheet of paper if you prefer a bordered look, like this:

The layered look would probably work great if you use a page protector, but I wasn't sure the thickness of the paper would work in my laminator, as I haven't done a lot of experimenting with it yet. I decided to skip the extra sheet of paper, and I actually like that my project will have a little extra lamination around the edges, I think it will give it some added durability. Here's my project ready go through the laminator:

After it was stuck together, I added some peel and stick magnets to the back, and the project was ready to look cute on the fridge!

Now, I just have to plan some menus!

{Tutorial Thursday} Calendar It: : 2012 11x8.5 Templates

Ready to get organized for the new year? Tackling Project 365 and looking for a way to organize all of your pictures? Then look no further than the Calendar It: 2012 Templates from Krisi's Kreations. While I used the templates originally to create a calendar to hang up for each month, I've also discovered that the template is extremely versatile and can be used for other projects throughout the year:

Project 365: I've hopped on the Project 365 +1 band wagon this year and am striving to take at least one picture a day that captures a moment, memory or snapshot of my life that I'd like to remember. I'm using the Calendar It templates to clip each of these pictures onto the calendar block for that day and at the end of the month, will have a month full of my daily snapshots to add to my album. Here's where I am so far this month!

Meal Planning: I also discovered that the templates are a great way to plan out a month's worth of meals so that at any glance, I know what we're having for dinner. I added a picture of each meal for each day that it will be served to remind me of what I should shop and cook for that day. The templates made it easy to visually plan a month's worth of meals in a snap and the best thing is that if I'm ever wondering what's for dinner today, tomorrow or next week, all I have to do is find it on the page! If you didn't have the pictures for your meal, you could also include the information in a text format each day.
These are just two out of many ideas on how to use the Calendar It templates but hope that they inspire you to put your own spin the templates. You can find these templates in Krisi's Kreations store in Scrap Orchard or by clicking on the template picture above. Happy crafting!

{Wacky Wednesday} Photography Tips

During Fall soccer, I ended up volunteering to take the individual and team photos for my son's team. Needless to say, I was under pressure for them to turn out well! One thing that really catches my eye for portrait style photography is having a small depth of field. This makes the subject really stand out and keeps the background from being a distraction. This can be achieved with manual settings if you have that kind of camera, or most point and shoot cameras have a portrait setting. Luckily I was taking photos outside so I was able to open my lens aperature as big as it would go and still get correct exposure with my shutter speed. The photo below is one that I took and the grass gets blurry in the distance, which is what I wanted.

A more extreme example is this flower photo that I took on a photo walk. I really just wanted to focus on the flower and not the greenery in the background. This was a f/4.5 and 1/40th shutter speed.

There are lots of technical explanations of depth of field and I don't pretend to understand it completely, but it is worth thinking about when taking photos and it's fun to play around with and see what different looks you can get!

{Tutorial Thursday} Wall Art Tutorial

Hello everyone! I'm Jen, a member of Krisi's Creative Team. I'm excited to be doing a tutorial today. I don't know about you, but our house always feels so bare after Christmas. Especially because we are still adding little things here and there to our decorating, even after living in our home for three years! I love adding fun, personal touches to things, and this weeks new release is perfect for a personal decor piece! Plus, it's very fitting to all of us moms. I know I feel overwhelmed trying to clean and entertain my son, and I've had to learn to just let the cleaning go sometimes. It will be even more true once our newest son arrives next month!

Anyway, let's get going with the tutorial! If you haven't seen it yet, this week's release is this:

So cute and fun! The image is linked so you can go right to the store! And you can personalize it any way you'd like. The digital kit I chose to use for this is a newer release by Chelle's Creations called "Spic N' Span". I love the colors and the elements are darling. Here are the steps for personalizing your own wall art (I am using Photoshop Elements 9 for this).

Wall Art Tutorial

1. First, download and unzip your file.
2. Open your file in whatever program you are using.

3. Next, find the kit you are going to use and begin to open the different files you think you want to use (I just drag and drop them into my program from the folder-much faster!)

4. Now, you will want to "clip" your papers to the different layers. Making sure that your background layer is highlighted in the "Messy Memories Wall Art" window, drag the paper you want to use onto the wall art. Then, clip that paper to the background. Do the same with each subsequent layer. (In Photoshop Elements, press Control "G" to clip things to layers) Resize the papers to your liking.

The highlighted area on the right (bottom) is where I clipped the paper to the background layer.

5. Next, after clipping your papers, you can begin to personalize it by adding elements and shadows.

6. When you have everything looking the way you'd like, go ahead and save it (be sure to save it as your original file and then "save as" a .jpg file). Here is mine:

7. Now that you have your image, the sky is the limit as to what you do with it. You can print it professionally and have it framed, print it at home, or mod podge it like I did! I found a a 5x7 block of wood at a local wood/crafting store, a little decorative piece for the top, and some ribbon, and paint. I printed my image off at home. I love my printer and I use Premium Presentation Paper in matte (by Hewlett-Packard) to print my projects. It's beautiful and sturdy. I painted the block first and then applied wood glue to the back of my image (it just works better). Then I applied mod podge to front of the image (I use Hard Coat for projects like this because it protects it better). Finally, add some ribbon and voila! A new piece for our living room.

{Project Life} Cover & Week 1

I know this wasn’t in the blogging schedule I announced on the 1st but… I decided to do Project Life and while I am not doing Project Life in print form, I am going to do it digitally. I have never done Project Life, P365, or any other project. I was going to do P52 last year but didn’t get past week 1. I was a little OCD with when the week started and stopped. This year the first was on a Sunday… that made it easy and happy for me! This is a huge step for me as I spend so much of my time designing hybrid stuff that I don’t scrap enough … but I NEED and WANT to. 2012 is the year that I am documenting US. I plan to print these in a photo book as a 10x10 but I am designing them 12x12 so I have my options open.

So I got these done so far (linked for credits).

{Monday Mix} Gleening inspiration from Pinterest

I try not to spend to much time on Pinterest – it is awfully addicting! I have found that I like to browse on my iPhone and pin ideas there. I have pinned a few Valentine’s projects that would work beautifully as hybrid projects – here are a couple of them.

When I first saw this one I immediately thought of the fun bright colors in so many digital kits – the back part and the robot could all be digital and just add the candy bar wrapped in digital paper, google eyes and the felt heart. Love it!

{Friday Fun} A look back at 2011 releases

Sorry for no {Thursday Tutorial} yesterday. I woke on New Years day with stomach pain and after 24 hours of pain I decided that I should go to the doctors. Of course Monday was a holiday for them so had to go to emergency. Well it turned out that is where I needed to be as I needed my appendix removed, which happened Tuesday. So while my team was ready to post a tutorial yesterday I didn’t get the product released! So watch next week for those products and a tutorial.

For today I thought we would take a look at some of my releases these past two months of 2011, as you might have missed something.

Now if I could only remember where I put it after the first week... that would be great! This year someone put each day into a Google calendar that you can add to your own calendar!!! {Monday Mix} Organizing with Hybrid

Welcome to our first week of Monday Mix, be sure to bookmark or subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss anything.

Many people look at the beginning of the year as a fresh start – I know I do. And one thing I have been doing TONS of is cleaning and clearing out. I went through my spice cupboard just before Christmas and even though I use it at least 3 times a week I was reminded of this fun project I did a couple years ago and thought I would share.

What other things can you do with baby food jars? Organize anything small. It might be out in the garage with screws, nuts or bolts or maybe on the desk holding those small annoying erasers that go over the old eraser, and don’t forget to use them in the craft room for eyelets and brads. And then of course right in your kitchen for spices & seasonings.

Get creative with what you combine from home with digital scrapbooking designs and create fun projects to give or keep.

Tabbed Ornament Tutorial

Hey everyone! Karen here with a tutorial on how to make a beautiful Ornament with Krisi's Tabbed Ornament Template.

I love to use the circle template with the center triangle. You can put it together in several ways, the simplest version would need 4 circles. And that was the one I put together when I got the template first without any idea what could be made out of it. Then I got the tip that you would need 20 circles to put together a ball shaped ornament and I was intrigued...and had loads of fun seeing it grow for the first time. Don't feel intimidated by the number of parts you need to put it together. The part that always takes me longest is designing the little triangles in Photoshop, the rest is fairly easy.

Here are the supplies you'll need for the ornament that's shown in the product preview.

As you can see I intend to cut the circles with a circle punch since trying to cut 20perfect circles is not my idea of fun ;).

So, when designing your circles you should already have an idea which size you want them to be. The first ones I made for this project got discarded in the end, because they were simply too busy and did not look good on the small scale I printed them in. I then went back to the designing table, so to speak, and made a new, much simpler set.

To get circles that have exactly the size of the circle punch you have available is very easy.
For the first one I made I first figured out the zoom factor I had to have in my design software to see exactly the size the circle would print. I brought the ruler up on screen and held another ruler to the screen and zoomed in and out of my canvas until the ruler on my screen exactly matched the one in front of my screen. For my laptop that is 33.33%.

I then started to resize the template until I had a 2 inch circle which I verified again by holding a ruler against my screen at 33.33% zoom.

This year I have learned a little more about Photoshop and will show you another way to get the right size.

Go to View/New Guide

(if you click on the pictures you can see them a bit larger)

You can place this new vertical guide anywhere on your canvas. For my example I placed it at 1 inch.

I then went to View/ New Guide again and this time I placed it at 2.75 inch, because my 2 inch circle punch does not work properly anymore and I wanted to try the next biggest I have, the 1 3/4 inch punch.

And here is a picture of how I sized my circles to fit exactly between those two guides.

A plus of using a 1 3/4" punch is that you can fit all 20 circles on one sheet of printer paper.

We're now coming to the loudest part: the punching. :)) Hubby does not like the sound too much, especially when he just fell asleep on the couch. *lol

The next step is to score all the lines of the triangle. That's a bit tedious, but absolutely necessary. I have treated myself to a scoring board recently, because I found that was the tool I was longing for most when working on projects, but scoring with the back of a knife along a ruler on a not too hard surface (I used my cutting mat) works just as well and even gives crisper lines.

As you can see, I took a black marker down the center line of my board, because there are so many lines that I never was sure I I hat the top of my line and the back of my line still on the same notch. Now I can easily see it.

After scoring all 20 circles it is time to get out the glue. I think wet glue applied to the tabs created by the score lines with some kind of brush to get a thin and even coat works best for this project. I was so lucky to find just the perfect glue during our vacation in Hungary. It is wet glue with a sponge tip that only puts a very thin coat on the paper. I guess ModPodge would work pretty well, too. I found that using glue has a lot to do with preferences, so just try your favourite glue on scrap circles and see if it works.

The ornament is put together in three circles or rows. For my ornament I used directional designs and designed 10 'normal' triangles and 10 triangles that stand on their tip. The top is made up of 5 circles with 'normal' triangles.

The picture shows the first row of five circles glued together and how 5 triangles standing on their tip go right underneath those. The spaces between the triangles that are standing on the head are filled with 5 'normal' triangles again. The second row of the ball therefore uses 10 triangles (5 'normal', 5 'en pointe').

When all those triangles are glued together at their tabs it looks like this:

Now would be the last opportunity to get the hanger ribbon or twine in there. That's how I did it before remembering that it is easier before the second row is all glued together. This is one of the moments that I don't mind my small hands. ;)

I just stuffed a ribbon through the tiny hole at the top where the 5 triangle points meet and secured it with my hot glue gun from the inside.

I have also used twine on these that I tied to a small piece of wood from a tooth pick which I put inside the ornament and then I threaded the twine through the top hole again.

The 5 triangles for the final row are standing on their tip again:

Again, when putting together this example, I remembered too late that I usually kept 1 triangle at the side to put in last. Here I glued all their tops to the last row and then glued all the sides. Worked as well, but I found keeping 1 circle to put in last after glueing everything else together is slightly easier.

You're almost done now, just add a few embellishments to your liking - or none if you like that better...and Voilà you're done.

The left ornament was done with 2" circles and measures approx. 4" diameter and the smaller one with 1.75" circles measures approx. 3.5" diameter and has the perfect size for a Christmas tree.

Phew… What a week, but something new

This week has been exhausting, thanks to this little girl…

I remembered that puppies were lots of work but I didn’t remember it was THIS much work! After having her here with us since Tuesday I can honestly say she is SUPER smart. She is an Australian Goldendoodle from Cutiedoodles and she really is amazing. Already learning where she needs to “go hurry up” (what we say for go potty) – outside!, learning when we come in she has to sit on the mat to get her paws wiped off (wouldn’t you know it would rain this week), learning to love her crate and just have fun!

But she is a big part of the reason that this post is going out so late!

Well it is official I am an ORCHARD GIRL, I have left ScrapMatters and found a new home at Scrap Orchard. So with this move I will slowly be moving my previous products into my store, it will take me a little bit of time – I have new examples to create and repackaging to do! Sorry this is getting posted more than halfway through the week – I had good intentions of posting sooner. Wanted to just point out a couple good buys at Staples (an office supply store in the US) that work great for hybrid.

While my template is not for this exact size legal pad it should resize pretty easily – and what a steal 33 cents each!

And this is a great price for those who want to do your own christmas cards and just get printed as a 4x6 at the photo lab. These would also be great to put your Desktop Calendar prints into... or make an envelope album with these using printed photos for the outside of them.

I can NOT believe I am posting this but tomorrow (Thursday) will be my last day at ScrapMatters, it seems a little surreal. I have been there since 2008 - well since I started digi really and I can hardly believe that I have decided to move to another store. I am not retiring, just moving to another store – what store would that be? Scrap Orchard!

I am very excited about the move – just never thought it would happen.

Beware! - Things Aren't Always What They Seem!

I have always loved Krisi's Sketch It Out - Cards: Sunshine template:

But, beware! Things aren't always what they seem - or, at least, they don't have to be!

What if the sun was not really a sun??? What if, in fact, it was a moon, and the brightness of the full moon's glow on Halloween Night could cast rays? Well, then, you might end up with a
Halloween card that looks something like this:

So, don't be afraid to experiment! Take a second look at some of these templates and see what else you can morph them into!

Manic Monday 10/24

It is another Manic Monday at ScrapMatters and Krisi has put her Jr Legal Pad Wrap template on sale today.

I love any kind of stationery. Already in school I collected note pads, letter paper and erasers. So, the Jr Legal Pad Wrap template has long been on my wish list. But because we do not have this size pad over here (I live in Germany) I never got it, until I decided to give it a try this month. And I just love how it came out and I don't think it will be the last I made. I used a maget as closure, but ribbon or velcro would work great as well.

To make it I measured the pad I had and then I resized the template accordingly using the ruler in Photoshop. It's really easy as it does not have to be exact, because of the margins around the pad. I took the template for the back, chose the form of my flap and locked that layer with the back and side layers and resized the back to a size a little larger than my pad. Then I took the full front template and pocket template and copied them into my first document. Now I could resize those two to match the size of my back.

So, if you have been deterred from using this template, because you cannot get your hands onto this size of pad, today would be the day to get it, because it is 50% off!

If you love challenges and love hybrid or feel like you might want to give it a try, you should check out the hybrid challenges over at ScrapMatters. I always get lots of ideas for projects I want to try myself.

This month's Getting Hybrid challenge is about party favors. And I want to show you a few templates in Krisi's shop that make creating party favors super easy.

These Tag Templates, for example, are great if you want a very quick and cute project. Just fill a cellophane bag with goodies and close it with one of these tags.

One thing that seems to be very popular lately is vinyl quotes that you can put on your wall. The letters are cut out with a Cricut or similar machine and then stuck to the wall, letter by letter, or using transfer tape. It looks really cool, but all I can think of is the labor involved! So I am excited to see that there are easier ways to put up cool wall art with your favorite quotes. It can all by done on your computer, printed out on nice paper, and framed for the wall. Portable, easy, cheap, easily customizable to your tastes, and no special equipment necessary! Maybe you're like me, and have trouble coming up with your own quotes. Luckily there are designers to do the work for you, like these templates from Krisi's Kreations:

Busy day here on the blog. I must first start by saying where did August go? My kids have been in school for a month already – it just seems CRAZY! Hybrid Favorites: Bone Folder

Happy Wednesday and welcome to another edition of Hybrid Favorites where we share our favorite tools to create hybrid creations. Today, I'd like to highlight one of the understated staples in my tool kit: the bone folder.

A bone folder can be purchased at any craft store and my favorites are from Martha Steward and Ranger.

It creates crisp and clean folds on all of your hybrid projects. Holding the bone folder between my thumb and pointer finger, I drag it across the fold to crease the edge for cards or create a scored line using a ruler for a straight line and the back side of a mousepad underneath to create indentations to fold. It makes hybrid crafty easy peasy and is a must for your hybrid tool kit.

Tutorial: Pendant Gift Box

I am using Krisi's small square box with Allison Pennington's "In My Own Backyard" kit

to make a gift box for a glass photo pendant I made for a friend of mine.

First, a look at my supplies:

Pretty simple tools, right? Of course, after I looked at the photo, I realized I left out two things: the velcro and the paper Easter grass! Oops!

Start by applying your choice of papers and elements to Krisi's template. Print and cut out the shapes, and then score and cut the slits.

Fold the box and glue the flaps in place. (I was amazed at how SIMPLE and FAST this box is to put together!)

Glue the sentiment circle to the front of the box. Then punch holes about a quarter of an inch from the outside edges on the very top panel of the box.

Place the pendant (already threaded with ribbon) in the box and feed the ribbon up through the holes in the top of the box. Pull the ribbon tight and tie a bow.

Add a small piece of velcro to hold the lid in place.

Stuff just a *bit* of paper Easter grass into the bottom of the box so that the pendant doesn't bang around inside (plus, it looks cute!). Voila! You're done!

True confessions: I like to give my tumbler a new "outfit" every once in a while, so I thought I'd share a few of my favorites with you. Last Christmas, I made this bright and happy "Holiday Tumbler":

Hybrid Favorites

I am a little late posting. I just wanted to bring you one of my favorite tools that I use when I make hybrid projects. It is my craft knife. I can cut so many more things with it than sissors. With sissors it looks choppy to me and the lines are not as clean. I can also cut very small things with the craft knife. There are tons of different knives so sometimes it is hard to decide. I found the big thing is to have a sharp blade. I also like to have a grip with a little cushion to it. The other thing to check is that your blade is tight before you start. Mine came loose one time and part of the way through my cut the knife went the wrong way. Here are some examples of the knives I use.

The blue on is I only use for small projects. Both the orange and the pink one are great for projects with a lot of cutting. The one thing that I love about the orange one is that it does not roll off of the table when I set it down. Hope that gives you an idea of what to look for when you need a craft knife.

Hybrid Tutorial

Hello Everyone! Christina here. How is everyone enjoying their summer break?

I know today's post is late. I thought I didn't post till the 29th.

So today or this evening rather I thought I would go over on how to get those lines

to disappear. If you been doing Hybrid then you probably already know

how to. And if you have some better ways why not

share them in the comments :) I know I will diffently enjoying

learning!

I have never did a hybrid tut before so bare with me.

I used Krisi's Creations Boxed Favor Vol 1

and the kit I used is from Inspirations from Day Best Day Ever Collection.

Krisi has several file types for everyone. So once you open your file in

your editing program and picked the papers you are ready to start.

Clip your papers on to the shape templates and once you do that

you are ready to adjust your guide lines.

I went to the very top layer to start.

So here is my finish project

And here is a picture of the bottom

Not sure what you can all see but if you do see the dotted lines

notice how they are blending in along the fold?

Also distressing it will help get rid of any lines and those white

spaces that I know I can't seem to help from having.

Hybrid Favorites

Hi, this is Jennifer from Krisi's creative team. Welcome to Hybrid Favorites! This is where we talk about a favorite tool or embellishment that can be used in the creation of hybrid projects.

One of my all-time favorite embellishments is Stickles. It's basically glitter glue, which comes in an easy to apply little bottle with a narrow tip. You can get many different colors, but my favorites are the neutral sparkly ones and the metallic colors like gold, silver, copper, etc.

I just did a project, this tabby ornament from Krisi's Kreations. I did the round ornament in a birthday theme, since I thought it would make a cute birthday decoration. The kit is His Day by Victoria Feemster.

This photo shows the ornament before the stickles:

It's a little hard to see in the photo unless you click on it for the enlarged version, but this shows the ornament with the stickles added. I just highlighted the balloon strings and the ribbon of the presents.

It's a great way to add a little sparkle and definition to your project!

Tutorial: Little Gift in a Hybrid Card

Hi!
I'm Caroline, a new member of Krisi's Hybrid-CT during this summer.
I'm here today to show you how to include a little present into a gift card.

I use this cute, yellow flower-hairclip:

Assemble and print your card like you always do. Make sure that you leave enough space for your clip or pin or whatever you'd like to add.

I used a Kit from Alissa Jones and Krisi's Write it Out: Sunshine

Next you have to choose a ribbon. I used a colorful one with colors to fit my card. Use whatever style, color or width you like. Even lace works.

Now you have to glue your ribbon to your card. Make sure that you just glue it at the ends and don't add glue in the middle. Like this:

Now you have to wait until the glue is dry. This is important!! Otherwise your ribbon will move if you try to add your flower clip.

When it's dry you can add your little gift. I just had to flip my hairclip onto the ribbon. If you have a pin you just pin it into the ribbon...

And that's all! It's really easy right? You now have a wonderful embellished card and included a little gift for the receiver of the card.

Hybrid Challenge: Banners, Flags & Bunting! Oh my!

Hi, Rebecca (ReboScraps) here to tell you about this month's Getting Hybrid challenge over at Scrapmatters. These challenges are a great way to get some tips about using your digi goodies to make real life pretties!

I picked Krisi's Banner Templates for my hybrid project. This pack includes 5 different shapes, and each shape comes in 3 sizes.

For my project, I used the rectangle, and also the one with the curvy shape on the bottom (in the preview, it's just peeking out there under the photo of the Happy Birthday banner) and created this little DREAM banner:

I often make hybrid projects to giveaway, whether it's a card or a little box for gift wrap, and this time I wanted to make something creative I can enjoy. I picked a scrap kit that matches my bedroom colors (Timeless Elegance by KimB.) On the panel for the letter "A" I added the quote by Henry David Thoreau that is also shown on the layout above:

Easy Tags!

Happy Wednesday, everyone! LeAnn, here (scaccogirl).
I wanted to give you a quick look at one of Krisi's products that I used recently
and was AMAZED at how simple it was to make a great-looking product.

My mom needed some tags for teddy bears that her church was giving away to people who are older and can't make it to church any more. I knew of the perfect solution!

I used Krisi's Tagged It templates:

It was super-simple to add papers and elements to these tag templates.
The hardest part was choosing which one to use! :)

There are a couple of ways you could potentially print these tags. One way is to separate the layers and print, so that you have more dimension to the end-product.

Because these were being mass-produced (relatively speaking), I chose to keep the layers together and create printable pages with multiple tags.

No matter which way you choose to do it, I am sure you will find it easy to come up with a beautiful product!

Hybrid Favourites

Hi, Karen (bydelstorp) here to start a new feature on Krisi's blog about our favourite hybrid tools or embellishments.

But first I want to tell you that it is Krisi's birthday tomorrow and that means you get some presents, too.

Krisi's Party Hat and Cake Slice templates are still 50% off today only and if you haven't already check out yesterday's post for the first freebie.

For today's post about Hybrid Favourites I chose ribbons. They find their way on most of my digital layouts and I also love to use them for my hybrid projects.
When I first started to buy ribbons I just could not resist the lovely patterned ribbons that were available, but I found that I rarely to never use them in my projects. The patterns either don't go with the paper style the colors fit with or the multicolored ribbons do not match the color combinations in my project. So, my suggestion for those that are just starting to build a little crafting/ hybrid stash would be to get some solid colored slim (1/8" - 1/2" width) ribbons in those colors that you love to use for your projects first and see where that leads you. Solid colored grosgrain, organza or satin ribbons are not very expensive and are the ones that I find myself using the most.

And now lets see where ribbons come in handy in hybrid crafting.

I loved the paper ribbon that came with the kit I used for this card made with the Sketch it out - Cards: Strips templates and wanted to use that, but when I had printed everything I decided that tying an actual ribbon would be much more effective

A pretty ribbon and a simple flower made with Krisi's Flower templates can transform a simple recycled jar of preserves into a beautiful centerpiece

On this Pillow Box I tried out something new and hot glued my ribbon in pleats around a punched circle until it was completely covered. To cover up the center where the cardstock was still showing I added a button, glued the whole on a simple fabric flower from the dollar store and Voilà I've got a gorgeous and inexpensive decoration for my project.

Highlight: Getting Hybrid Challenge: Accordian Flowers

Tamara (tsmspt) here bringing you some ideas for flowers! This month's getting hybrid Challenge at ScrapMatters is hosted by ScrappyCath and is all about flowers found here. You don't have to make a whole project, you just have to make some flowers. For my project ideas I am using Krisi's Accordian Flowers.

I make my first project for a BBQ contest that is coming up for Ladies Fellowship. I used a Kit by The Design Girl called Backyard BBQ.
I have a picture of what I designed in photoshop and the flower I made. Don't be discouraged about how the center of the flower looks because you can cover it. There is a hole in the center.
And after cutting it all out and adding some ribbon here is the finished project.

Here is another project I made using Krisi's Accordian Flowers and Some Parts from ScrapMatter's April Mix A Kits.

Here is the project. I had my daughter cover this paper pencil holder with tissue, then I made the flower decoration with my digi goodies. Then I added some flower lollipops for a sweet teacher gift.

I hope you will have as much fun as I did using Krisi's Accordian Flowers.

Looking Back: Box it Up Basket

Today we are looking back at one of Krisi's older templates. The Box it up Basket. I made this for my daughter's teacher at the end of the school year. I love this box because you are not limited to only the size of the box. I put 2 books in it and just let them stick out of the sides.
It was really easy and super fast to make. I came home from work and made it before I went to bed. I made it in my editing program and then printed it out and cut out all of the pieces. I like to cut out my embelishments and re-glue them on with 3D dots. I also used Krisi's new word art, Write it Out: Moms, Dads and Grads. To finish the basket I punched holes in the top (They are marked on the template), threaded some ribbon through it and I was finished. One thing that I noticed has worked for me is I use glue dots on the seams. I used my tape runner and they fall apart. To make the books fit I rolled them and tied them with the same ribbon I had used on the basket. Here are the pictures of my finished product.

Hope you enjoyed a little inspiration because I really loved having an easy and beautiful box for my present.

TUT: Double the use of your templates

When I am looking for templates I look for templates that can be versatile. Let's look at "Sketch It Out - Cards: Sunshine" by Krisi's Kreations. It is a cute card template, but don't let the "card" label fool you. I look at this template and see possibilities.

In this mini-tutorial I want to show you one of those possibilities. I am going to make a goodie bag topper. They are a very simple project to make, perfect for beginner hybrids and to let your kids help you.

Since Father's day is pretty close, we will be doing a Father's Day goodie bag topper.

Hi, I am Jennifer, a new member of Krisi’s CT! After I was accepted, I spent even more time going through her store to see which project I wanted to try. It was hard to narrow down, but I finally decided to try the Junior Legal Pad Wrap:

I always like the idea of making something that can be used as a nice gift. I have made similar things using paper and stamps, but to me, one of the advantages to doing hybrid is for projects like this. You can add dimension without adding bulk. Since this is something that will be handled, it is nice to be able to embellish it without worrying about making it too bulky by having things on there that will fall off or get crumpled when someone tries to slip this into their purse or backpack. I also decided to print this off on cardstock. It loses some sharpness that way, but it seemed to make more sense for this project, and make it a little sturdier. I decided to use the inner pocket option, so I ended up with three pages to print:

You have choices for the shape of the flap, which is a nice feature of this template. I reduced the opacity of my scoring lines so they wouldn’t shop up very much but I could still see it enough to make my score lines. After printing, I simply cut and scored, and then assembled the holder. I used one of my favorite tools, the Crop-o-dile, to add an eyelet for my ribbon closure. Another easy closure would be a small piece of sticky-back velcro. I didn't think to take photos of the project in progress, but here are the tools I used:

Looking Back - Recipe Card Box

Hello, everybody!

This is LeAnn, a new member of Krisi's CT. I can be found as ScaccoGirl over in the gallery and forums at ScrapMatters. I'm here with today's episode of Looking Back.

Today we'll be taking a look at a project I made using Krisi's "Box it up: 3x5 card box" template:

I decided to go with the food theme of the recipe box and chose Erica Zane's What's Cooking? {the whole batch} kit to go with it:

Only, the finished product will not actually hold recipes. It's going to hold photos!
Grandma Merry LOVES to have photos of her grandkids, and I had some pics of her making a pancake breakfast for us the last time we were at her house. Sounds like the perfect recipe to me! (Hee! Hee! I love puns!) :)

Here's how it happened:

I chose papers and elements for the box template. Krisi's template includes "divider" tabs, too, so I chose complementary papers for those. I saved each piece as a jpg file and took the files to Office Max on a flash drive to have them printed on heavy cardstock. Their laser printer gives the images a bit of a sheen and makes the project look more professional. It's nice, but, of course, not necessary, especially since Krisi's templates print on regular letter-size paper.

I wanted to make sure the box was really sturdy, since it was a recipe box, so I found some cardboard backing and glued the cardstock to it. After the glue dried, I cut around the template and scored the fold lines with a bone folding tool. I used another piece of cardboard as a guide.

Then I folded the pieces and glued the front/bottom together and the back/top together. Because the cardboard was so stiff, I used rubber bands to keep the pieces in place.

When those dried, I glued the two pieces together to complete the box. I also used a bunch of rubber bands for that step.

After it dried I added a dot of velcro with sticky backing to keep the lid closed.

For the "recipes", I made little 3" x 5" canvases and scrapped layouts of our breakfast fun.

I cut those out, along with the divider tabs, and put them in the box. Voila!

[NOTE TO READERS: Please do not think that, in regards to hybrid, you either "have it" or "you don't", because, in general, hybrid projects are a bit of a trial and error experiment. Case in point: I glued the cardstock to the cardboard, then cut it, then scored it, and then glued it all together. Because my cardboard was so thick and stiff, the folded edges of the cardstock sort of "popped" and frayed a little bit on the outside. Now, it wasn't enough to throw the whole thing out and start over. I really had two options: take a bit of glue and smooth the fray, or I could have inked the edges of the box. I decided to glue down the worst parts of the fray, and let the rest look "antiqued." In retrospect, I could have cut out the pieces of cardstock and cardboard separately, scored and folded them, and then glued them together, trimming the cardboard layer underneath where it would stick out farther than the top layer of cardstock. But I went with it, and I love how it turned out! Don't be afraid to try hybrid because something might go wrong. If it does - it just adds character! :) ]

Pillow Door Hanger

Hello Everyone! I am Christina, and I am excited to be on Krisi's Team :)

Today I made a Pillow Box Door Hanger. These are so cool and you could use it for any

holiday or just because :) I love these in that you can put things in the front pocket.

Krisi has four different files for you to open in just about any program, PSD, TIFF, PNG's

and PDF's.

Here is what I have after getting it printed and the supplies I like to use

Once I got it cut it out I decided I wanted to distress it alittle. I think it makes a project look much better and helps cover up boo boo's :)

I use the distress pad, Q-tip or cotton ball to apply it to the edges.

These are really simple to make and don't take much time. I really loved how it turned out.

You can fill them with a card, notes, gift cards anything you can think of that will

fit.

The flower I printed separate and cut it out. I used Collab For The Love of Boys By Jady Day Studio and Stolen Moments.

Card Making

Teresa, tpowers in the forums, here to bring you a quick tutorial on card making. I know that when I went digital the one thing I had a hardtime giving up was paper cards. Digital ones always looked a little flat to me in person. After learning some things and picking up tips and a few tools I love to do my cards digital too.
The first thing that I do is make the card in Photoshop. For my example I used Krisi's Sketch it Out-Cards:Sunshine.

Next make a new canvas that is your printing size. I print mine at home so I make a 8.5X11 in canvas. I seperate all of my pieces and arrange them on my canvas. Keep it away from the edges so that everything is the size you expect. I never was a stamper so I merge my font with the layer below it so that it looks stamped on. Here is what mine looked like.

Cut each of you pieces out. I use an exacto knife but, you could use sissors too. I then, inked my edges to add some texture.

Now just add adhesive to the pieces and assemble the card. I use a Xyron but, you can use any scrapbooking adhesive. For the cupcake I use 3D dots because it makes things stick off of the pages. Next, adhere the card front to a piece of coordinating cardstock. I chose a blue. Here is my finished card.

These are the extra tools that I used. None were terribly expensive to purchase. The cutting mat was left from my paper days. I have used an old magazine under my paper when using an exacto knife and it works.

Here are a few more card examples from the templates above. I love that they are so versatile.

For the flower I used Krisi's Create a Flower v1. These are quickly becoming my favorite.

Make your own Flower Decorations

Hi, everyone. I am Karen from Krisi’s CT. In the forums I usually go under the name of bydelstorp.

Today I want to show you how a recycled glass jar, a little sand or, as in my case, white stones , pretty ribbon and a few printed flowers can make a beautiful decoration for a summer table.

I used a gorgeously grungy paper from Serenity by Happy Scrap Girl Designs

And Krisi's Create it Yourself: Flowers v. 1

For my project I chose the flower at the bottom, which is really pretty and easy to cut out.

And here’s my printed page. I did not have enough to print to fill an entire page so I cut one up into quarters to get photo sized paper that I could put into my printer's photo tray.

As you can see I printed different sizes. I wanted to see how they turned out and then print more, but I then decided that layering the flowers in different sizes would be just perfect. You can also see that one of the flowers is slightly cut off at the edge. I never seem to get the paper perfectly aligned in my printer so I always need to keep an edge around my designs. Here I did not worry about the cut off edge since I wanted my flower to be grungy anyways and did not worry too much about accuracy when I cut them out, makes them more real.
Since I wanted my flower to be a little shabby and grungy, I distressed the edges and crumpled the flowers into little balls after I cut them out.

After straightening them out again I curled the petals around a brush handle to give them more shape. Anything round will work for this. I use whatever falls into my hands first. Chopsticks are great for this as well.

After I liked the shape of the single flowers I glued them together in layers. Again tweaking a bit here and there until I liked the shape, and added a button with twine to the center.
Then I tied some pretty ribbon around a recycled glass jar from the pantry, glued the flower to the bow with a glue dot and voilà I had a custom candle jar that matched the beautiful milk and sugar set that I inherited from my great grandmother.

Using Digi Design Tips in your Hybrid Projects

Hi, there! Rebecca here today, one of Krisi's CT members. You can find me in scrap forums and galleries under the name "ReboScraps."

Today, I'm going to share one of my newest projects, and how I used digi design tips when I was creating my project. A couple weeks ago, Liz (mommy22girls) posted tips about color proportions for the ScrapMatters Saturday Special Challenge. The concept is that when choosing colors for your page or project, you use proportions similar to gallons, pints and quarts. The "gallon" will be your primary color, the "quart" is your secondary color, using it about 1/4 (ish) of the amount of your gallon color, and then the "pint" is just touches of a third color.

I used this technique when creating a card. Since the front of a greeting card is basically a 1-dimensional canvas like a scrap page, concepts like this are easy to apply to hybrid projects, and I think a color concept like this would also be helpful for a 3-dimensional project like a box.

So here's my card, which you may have seen in Friday's new release post. My "gallon" is the (mostly) white background, my "quart" is the grey, and my "pints" are the yellow and orange. I like to "scrap" my hybrid pictures in to layouts, so just look at the photo of the card, because I didn't necessarily follow the rules for the page!

This card is made with the Sketch It Out - Cards: Sunshine templates and Write it out: Sunshine word art, both of which are included in Krisi's 2011 NSD Hybrid Grab Bag until today! (Starting Thursday, they will be available separately in her ScrapMatters shop.

My mother used to tell me that being poor was the key to creativity. She was half joking, and she definitely said this with a blessed spirit. I could never consider myself poor, having so much to be thankful for. For me I would have to say that thriftiness inspires my creativity. I think I get more excited when I figure out how to do something without spending money, than I get about anything else.

In September of 2010, Krisi asked me if I wanted to guest on her CT team. At that time I was very new to hybrid. I sent her an email to let her know that as far as hybrid went, I was pretty simple. There are some ladies that are so elaborate and detailed and I love their stuff so much. But me, I have ADD and if I can't make it with a few cuts it will just have to be left to someone else. In addition this hybrid thing can be a trap with all the wonderful gadgets you can get. I told Krisi that I didn't even have an official pair of scissors (I was using my kids school scissors), and ask her what did she recommend for scissors. She said she really like the cutting bee scissors by EK Success (though she did warn me they were sharp). So I went to Micheal's that night with my 40 percent off coupon and picked up those scissors and have never looked back. Since then I have added a crop a dile. I use my kitchen paring knife for all my scoring. My husband also has a paper cutter I use often.

The hybrid I am going to do today is something I make often. Because it is so easy. I usually just make little notebooks, but my twin daughters are 10 and the girliness is just oozing out of them so I wanted to jazz up a little notebook for them.

Here is the Krisi template that fit the bill for this girlie goodness.
Of course I needed a kit too. This one was perfect for transforming this template into a notebook for my daughter McKinley to carry around to draw in and color.

And this is what what I made putting them both together.Krisi's design is for an actual purse, but she designs her template in layers so it is easy to adapt them when you need to change things up just a little. I didn't need the sides, but I needed the front, back, and closure. Here is a picture of the printed page and other supplies I needed for the project.The steps are pretty easy.

1. Twist the coil binding out of an old notebook. This is very simple to do, but you may have to bend the wire a little. You just continue to twist it until it is all the way out.

2. Then you just use the original cover as a template to puch holes along the top. If you have a Crop-A-Dile you will be able to do more at a time. I like to use a binder clip when I am doing several at a time. Sometimes I am just making a new personalized cover for an existing notebook. But for this project I just cut my own paper to the size needed for the project.

3. Last you just need to twist your coil binding back through the notebook.

That’s it, your done! This technique is so simple to do! A few year ago I took a project to Kinko’s and they charged me $7 to bind a mini-notebook and they even threw away the binding that they cut off the ends. I asked for it, since while watching them twist the coil in by hand I immediately knew that I would be doing it myself from that point. And they refused! Anyway, now I have my kids twist all the coils out of all their old notebooks!
